End of route for Elevador da Estrela at Largo da Estrela (Praça da Estrela). On the right a car from the Elevador, on the left a Carris electric tram.

Photo taken between 1901 (when electric trams were introduced in Lisbon) and 1913 (when the Elevador da Estrela closed).

Inside the depot of Elevador da Estrela.
The depot was located somewhere near the upper terminus at Largo da Estrela (now Praça da Estrela), but exact location is unknown. Appearently builing does not exist in 2024.

Praça da Estrela

Upper terminus of Elevador da Estrela located in front of the Basílica da Estrela. Cable car #1 is being pushed onto the turntable located at the terminus. Another unknown cable car is partially visible ready to head back to Praça Luis de Camões. Noteworthy is the fact that at this time Portugal had left-hand traffic.
An open 2-axle Brill car can be seen passing by. Which indicates that the photo was taken between 1901 and 1913.

Estrela, Calçada da Estrela

Signalmen giving the "advance" signal on Calçada da Estrela. Exact location unknown, but possibly at the corner of Calçada da Estrela and Rua de São Bento, as the streets behind the photographer are narrow and only one-way traffic is possible.
In 2024 tram route 28 headed to Estrela would come from behind the photographer and go up the Calçada da Estrela visible in the photo. Trams going the opposite way would make a right turn to the left of the photographer onto Rua de São Bento. When Carris took over this route the route from Estrela was rebuilt thus eliminating the need of signaling at this location.

Misericórdia, Calçada do Combro

Signalmen changing the signal at the end of Calçada do Combro.
Exact location unknown, but possibly near the corner of Calçada do Combro and Rua do Poço dos Negros. The street behind the photographer (Rua dos Polais de São Bento) is too narrow for two way traffic.
In 2024 this route it taken by tram 28 going towards Estrela, while the opposite direction was diverted onto Rua do Poço des Negros when Carris took over this line to eliminate the need of signals.

Cable tram — Elevador da Graça (1893 — 1909)

São Vicente, Calçada do Graça

Unknown cable car is about pass through Arco de Santo André (built in 1373, demolished in 1913).
In 2024, the cable car would be turning from Calçada de Santo André and turning onto Calçada da Graça. Tram route 12E follows the route of Elevador da Graça from Rua da Palma up to this point. When Carris took over this route (in 1913) the route along Calçada da Graça was abandoned and a new route was to São Tomé. Modern route would go to the left in this photo. The exact passage did not exist when the photo was taken, as it was created by demolishing Arco de Santo André.

Cable car #2 on Largo da Graça in front of doorways 29 and 30.
In 2024 tram route 28 (and 12 towards Martim Moniz) also go past the same location, but the tracks are a bit further from the visible houses, because these trams come from Rua da Voz do Operário and make a slight right turn, while the Elevador da Graça came from Calçada da Graça and made a left turn.

Unknown cable car at the lower terminus of Elevador da Graça. An electric tram is passing by along Rua da Palma, which means the photo is taken between 1901 and 1913.

In 2024 this location is the northern end of Praça Martim Moniz. The only thing visible in this photo, that still exists today is the building in the background (windows in upper right corner of photo) which is located at the corner of Rua José António Serrano and Rua de São Lázaro.
