The tramway festival in Turin this year was organized to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the local tram association, which boasts an excellent collection of historic trams. In today's upload see the first installment of photos from the event.

I usually avoid tramway parades and festivals due to the hype and hassles associated with them, and too many people ‘in the shot’. However, this particular event seemed to be well planned out, at least as advertised. While the Italians are usually laidback, extremely friendly and welcoming when it comes to railfanning which promised an adequate atmosphere around the event.

I was a bit worried about the organization in real life when it comes to Italy, however, the Northern Italy proved to be a different country yet again ) Everything worked out top-notch perfect. All available historic trams operated in service on the special route for 2 hours in the morning. All old cars then lined up at Piazza Statuto on trackage that is not used for revenue service, providing an opportunity to closely review each car. This followed by a parade of all cars through the city center via Castello to Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Those who wished, could stay and ride on trams of their choice for the parade. Newer trams and some work cars joined the parade as well. All together a total of 21 trams participated in the procession. Three historic buses, including a double-decker, have also been operated in special service and participated in the parade. Some cars then returned into service on the special route for another 4 hours until evening. Maps and times have been provided for the special route and the parade.

The mood of the event was remarkably laid back, calm and friendly. Smiles and greetings all around. Ample opportunities for photography with minimal interference from others, as people were giving each other space and taking turns. A lot of French and British fans, visitors from the US, Canada and even Australia. Naturally a lot of German fans )

A minor downside was that not all cars operated in service in the second half of the day, without any information available regarding which cars will operate. This made it difficult for participants to choose which trams to ride in the morning, so not to miss the particular vehicle they wanted to ride. Also the entire anniversary conference with various events and presentations was scheduled for 3 days, while trams operated only for 1 day. A similar all-Belgian event last year was scheduled for 2 days with trams operating on both days.

The major downside was (yet again) a few obsessive German tram fans that spoiled all the fun for others. Germany has the strongest tram preservation culture in the world, and the largest contingent of tram fans. The vast majority are great enthusiasts and exceptionally friendly people. But very few 'special' characters take the fan to a special competitive level, probably because of, well, a lot of competition back home. In Turin such characters could be spotted for tense obsessed faces, vying for their fix on photo shots. There were a few instances of pushing and shoving for a photo spot. Some went into yelling rage and finger-flashing if something didn’t go their way. A complete shame and by far not the first time this happened at tramway festivals around Europe. Something that takes joy out of these events and discourages from attending in the future.

В этом году трамвайный фестиваль в Турине был организован в честь 20-летия местной трамвайной ассоциации, которая может похвастаться превосходной коллекцией исторических трамваев. В сегодняшней загрузке см. первую часть фотографий с этого мероприятия.

Обычно я избегаю трамвайных парадов и фестивалей из-за канители и дурдома, зачастую связынных с ними, а также из-за слишком большого количества "людей в кадре". Однако, судя по предварительному анонсу со всеми схемами и графиками, данное мероприятие было довольно хорошо распланировано. Одновременно итальянцы - обычно распологающе уравновешенная, чрезвычайно дружелюбная и гостеприимная публика на предмет трамвайного фанатства, что обещало адекватную обстановку вокруг фестиваля.

Призанться, всё же на предмет организации в реале в случае с Италией не было уверенности. Однако северная Италия и в этом вопросе оказалась совсем другой страной, отличной от Италии ) Всё прошло на высшем уровне. Начиная с утра, первые 2 часа все имеющиеся исторические трамваи работали на специальном маршруте по центру города. Затем все вагоны были выставлены на Piazza Statuto на путях, не используемых в маршрутном обороте, что дало возможность осмотреть каждый вагон. После этого состоялся парад всех вагонов по центральной части города через Castello до Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Желающие могли прокатиться в вгаонах по всей трассе парада. К параду также присоединились более новые трамваи и служебные вагоны. Всего в данном шествии участвовал 21 вагон. Также работали на специальном маршруте, а затем участвовали в параде 3 исторических автобуса, включая двухэтажный. После парада некоторые вагоны вернулись на специальный маршрут еще на 4 часа, до самого вечера. Все схемы и расписания специального маршрута и трассы парада были заранее предоставлены.

Атмосфера вокруг фестиваля была исключительно непринужденной, спокойной и дружелюбной. Улыбки и приветствия повсюду. Было предостаточно возможностей для фотосъемки с минимальным вмешательством людей, т.к. публика осмотрительно соблюдала пространство при фотографировании и/или фотографировали по-очереди. Было много любителей из других стран, в частности, из Франции и Англии. Естественно, было много фанатов из Германии. Были гости из США, Канады и даже Австралии.

Небольшим недостатком было то, что не все вагоны работали во второй половине дня, и при этом не было информации о том, какие именно вагоны будут работать. Это затрудняло участникам выбор трамваев для проезда на вгаоне утром, с учётом того, чтобы не упустить прокатиться на желаемом вагоне. Кроме того, вся конференция с различными мероприятиями и презентациями была запланирована на 3 дня, в то время как исторические трамваи работали на линии только 1 день. Для сравнения, аналогичное все-бельгийское мероприятие в Генте в прошлом году было запланировано на 2 дня, при этом трамваи работали на линии оба этих дня.

Главным недостатком (опять и снова) стали несколько одержимых немецких фанатов, которые подпортили удовльствие остальным. В Германии самая сильная в мире субкультура вокруг сохранения старых трамваев, и самое большое количество трамвайных фанатов в мире. Подавляющее большинство из них — позитивные любители своего дела и исключительно дружественные товарищи. Но некоторые отдельные субъекты иногда доводят фанатство до особого соревновательного уровня, вероятно ввиду большой конкуренции на фанатство вокруг трамваев у себя дома. Обычно таких персонажей можно сразу заметить на фестивалях по подозлобленным и одержимым лицам: товарищи во что бы то ни стало пытаются добрать свою дозу фотодопинга. В Турине отдельные перцы конкретно физически толкались ради места для фотографии. Некоторые индивиды бросались в крик и показ пальца, если что-то неустривало их фотопланы. Вообщем, полный мовитон, и это не первый подобный случай от таких фанатов на трамфестивалях в Европе. Что отбивает всякое удовольствие и желание посещать подобные мероприятия в будущем.

Тем неменее, возвращаясь в позитив — особая благодарность организаторам за в остальном отличный праздник )

I also took part in what was a really great festival. Compared to last year, there were significantly more international fans in the crowd, which is simply down to the slightly larger anniversary edition. Ultimately, we must also remember that not everything is for classic tram fans who know every number by heart or take the typical 45-degree photos. The event is also clearly aimed at the general public who enjoy a ride through Turin and want to experience something new. This is also clearly demonstrated by the date: on a Sunday in December, the trams are simply another attraction alongside a stroll through the bustling city centre.
Even though it was a bit difficult to take photos during the parade (a friend at ATTS said that the police simply did not allow Piazza Vittorio to be closed to traffic), away from the hustle and bustle it was a really great event and the beautiful city centre with the low sunlight is a wonderful venue, with the magnificent Giardini Reali and the Mole Antonelliana in the background or the last rays of light reflecting off the market building.

The event was very well advertised through international channels well ahead of the time, probably thanks to the anniversary. This included good maps and schedules for all the activities that were published in advance, creating the image of a well organized event. I knew about this festival since spring and pre-planned my travels. There were others from the US, Canada and Australia among my friends and people I know who attended this festivities. Very well done by the organizers!
