As of 2024 the formerly attractive Han-sur-Lesse interurban tram operation is in complete disarray.

The system used to be famous for classic 1930s-built diesel interurban trams of the former Belgian National Vicinal system operating via the 4-km long line through the forest between the loop at the center of Han-sur-Lesse village to the Grottes de Han (Caves de Han). 4-car trains consisting of motor car with trailers used to maintained service on the line. The tram operation is managed by a private company. Details on the this operation can be found here:
http://ymtram.mashke.org/belgium/han_sur_lesse/
http://ymtram.mashke.org/belgium/han_sur...en.html

Diesel trams have been rebuilt into battery cars in the mid-2010s, thus the trams completely lost its authenticity and character.

Ever since after COVID trams no longer transport passengers to the caves. Various sources indicate that the private company operating the caves and the surrounding attractions used the COVID crisis to expand its base of operation and relocate it outside of the village. Trams didn't fit into the new operations scheme and fell victims to the new logistics.

Thus trams no longer operate to the outer Grottes station. The segment to the center of the village and the loop at Han-sur-Lesse is no longer used either. Nowadays the tram service is downgraded to a 800-meter long segment of the line between the gathering point for Safari Rides outside the village (located near the depot) and the Boine Station. A single tram operates every 30 min, carrying very few passengers to one of the attractions within the expanded entertainment park that mushroomed around the caves.

The loop in Han-sur-Lesse village is used for prolonged storage of trailers and charging the motor cars. Technically speaking the loop is needed for a turnaround of trains whenever longer consists with trailers are hypothetically used on the remaining segment of the line. Trams run via the full length of the line to Grottes for special excursions only. Timings and arrangement mechanism for such excursions are uncertain.

In 2023 plans for a new loop to be built outside of the village had been approved. The loop will be a part of the new base for the surrounding entertainment complex. At the same time the old segment to the village center most likely will be abandoned. See the light grey line on the following map:
https://transphoto.org/photo/1982084/
Otherwise the role of the trams in the future entertainment park scheme is uncertain.

http://ymtram.mashke.org/belgium/han_sur_lesse/
http://ymtram.mashke.org/belgium/han_sur...ru.html

https://transphoto.org/photo/1982084/

Unfortunately today and completely unexpectedly, the decision was made to permanently close the line.
The staff (5 people) were also fired with immediate effect and thanked for their services.

This line was the remnant of an originally larger local tram network owned by the SNCV. The operation was handed over to a local subcontractor.
Over the years, a lot has changed, of course: the SNCV ceased to exist and became TEC, while the Caves of Han became part of a much larger tourist attraction, including a wildlife park, as well as certain attractions for children, etc.

What remained unchanged was the legal status: TEC still owned all infrastructure (including vehicles) and paid the subcontractor for operations.
Meanwhile, the TEC had determined that this had become purely a tourist attraction (which it had been for the past 50 years...) and that not only did it cost a lot of money, but it also no longer generated any income: the tram ride was included in a visit to the caves or, later, to the wildlife park.

The TEC offered the entire package (all infrastructure, including the vehicles) to the wildlife park and caves of Han for €5,000,000.
Naturally, the operating costs would no longer be the responsibility of the TEC.
The park (a private company) cannot afford such amounts, let alone cover the costs of its staff. The number of visitors had fallen so dramatically that it was and still is impossible to operate at break-even.

The future will reveal what will happen next. The trams were modernised (with various European subsidies), but the chance that a museum line will be able to purchase (= pay for) the vehicles is minimal. Delivered free of charge: everyone would want that...

Yury explained what happened.
Before Covid, all visitors to the caves were required to use the tram. This generated a lot of traffic (especially in high season). In principle: two trams with two trailers and a third separate tram, all travelling in convoy on the single-track section.
After Covid, they changed the walking and access route to and within the caves. Visitors no longer needed to take a tram ride.
A section of the tram route was reused to transport visitors to the wildlife park. This transport was optional and was not a part of the park visit.

The tram was no longer of any use to the current operator of the area (which includes all the attractions) and its existence (and timetable) had been hidden away on their website: so it was no longer being promoted.
The operating costs of the tram were included in the total costs of all attractions.
The TEC apparently also wanted to abandon this line.
The private company (Caves, Wildpark...) is now reviewing each component separately. A glamping site, established during Covid, will also be closed due to unprofitability. And at the same time, also the tram.
It is therefore a combination of circumstances, where it is quite clear that both the TEC and the caves (or wildlife park) no longer wanted this tram.

Most were renovated with electric motors (battery trams). These can certainly still be used elsewhere, but the question is where. Only commercial amusement parks will be willing to pay for these trams, but the question is whether they really want to do so...

Sad news...

Maybe some metre-gauge tourist railways in France could show an interest... If they could be regauged narrower, there would be an interest on 760 mm in Central Europe - particularly Hungary, Slovakia and Romania - for sure.

I expect 2 problems. The TEC (owner of the vehicles) expect to receive many money for these trams. And: some local groups (like TTA and ASVI) will try to obtain them (or one of them) via some local instances. This exactly how ASVI could grow so quickly and TTA obtained a new depot, new tracks and so on.

I don't know what the quality is of this battery trams. The old trams are very easy for maintenance. No idea how it is with these renovated trams.
Ans surely not if the battery is still in an acceptable condition.

We'll see what happen with the line in Han and with the trams.
