Oostende, Ernest Feysplein
Ostend once had two train stations, 130 metres apart. The present station was at first only for international trains, with connections to the boats to England.
The second station served for domestic traffic and was then also served by tramlines: it is from this station that this photo was taken. The station was closed definitively in 1946 and all trains since then end at the present station.
The tramway was electrified, but the steam trams continued to run during the winter until 1909: electric trams then only ran during the summer months.
The city of Ostend was almost completely destroyed during the war, but a part of a historic front was preserved.

An excellent comment!
Electricity was initially introduced for the tram companies. Shortly afterwards, street lighting, which used to run on gas or oil, was systematically replaced by electric bulbs.
Electricity connections in houses were quite rare back then - and the coast was not nearly as densely built as it is today - and it was only later that electricity connections were made in the home, even just for lighting: there was nothing else.
Thus, the electricity producer supplied mostly the tram company (their only customer) and additionally: for lighting. During the summer, the need started when there were hardly or no trams running and then the production was sufficient.
During the short days of winter, the problem was that both the tram company and others (for lighting) needed electricity during the same period. So this was solved in 1909, by increasing the capacity of electricity production, also because electricity was more established by then.
