“During WWI, the Boston Elevated Railroad planned to convert trolleys into ambulances to transport wounded soldiers from seaports to hospitals. Even though construction on the first trolley ambulance was completed in 1918, the trolleys were never used because regular motorized ambulances were more convenient; among other things, motorized ambulances could drive straight onto the docks and up to the hospital ships.”
