The city plans to close its trolleybus system in the coming years and replace it with electric buses.

In addition to the well-known arguments that trolleybuses are an “obsolete technology”, the municipality has wanted for several years to pedestrianize Domnească Street, a street that currently runs trolleybuses.

No deadline has been announced for when the trolleybuses will stop running, but it is expected that the start of work on this street will coincide with the publication of a tender for new electric buses.

Tramway Route 39 has been extended from COMAT to Depou Bariera Traian.

Publication of tender for purchase of 20 electric buses (12m) through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
18.01.2024: contract was signed with Solaris Bus & Coach.

21 május 2023 .

Publication of tender for purchase of 22 electric buses (9m) through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
14.12.2023: contract was signed with Solaris Bus & Coach.

17 május 2023 .

Publication of tender for purchase of 10 trams (18m) through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
15.01.2024: contract was signed with Astra Vagoane Călători.

Route 44 (Piața Centrală — COMAT) has been reopened. Route 39 has been extended from Micro 40 to COMAT.

Trolleybus route 104 (Tiglina 3 — Centru) has been closed due to the low passenger loads, the overlap with other routes and the easy alternatives for transfers with other means of transport. Before the closure, there were 2 trolleybuses operating on route 104 with an average load of 14% of carrying capacity on the segment unique to this line.

Route 39 has been partially reactivated after finishing the reconstruction of the network between Micro 19 and Piața General Berthlot (Micro 40)

22 március 2022 .

Testing of the section between Piața Energiei and Piața General Berthlot.
Route 39 is set to become active again from 1st of April between Micro 19 and Piața General Berthlot.
The complete route will become active when the roadworks on Bulevardul George Coșbuc will be done.

1 március 2020 .

The entire tramway network is temporarily closed for 18 months due to a major reconstruction of the network on Strada Siderurgistilor and Bulevardul 1 Decembrie 1918. All trams are replaced with buses.

17 december 2018 .

Tram route 41 (Micro 40 — Poarta Est C.S.G.) is closed due to low profitability.

6 szeptember 2018 .

The tramline section from Baia Comunala to Bazinul Nou has been closed.

Publication of tender for purchase of 8 trams (18m) through the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020.
19.03.2020: contract was signed with Astra Vagoane Călători.
14.12.2021: all trams were delivered.

21 március 2017 .
