Tietoa

Carris Metropolitana is the unified bus network serving the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, structured into four operational zones radiating from Lisbon:
— Area 1 – North-West: Amadora, Cascais, Oeiras, Sintra (routes 1xxx), operated by Viação Alvorada (Oeiras).
— Area 2 – North-East: Loures, Mafra, Odivelas, Vila Franca de Xira (routes 2xxx), operated by Rodoviária de Lisboa (Lisbon).
— Area 3 – South-West: Almada, Barreiro, Seixal, Sesimbra (routes 3xxx), operated by Transportes Sul do Tejo (Almada).
— Area 4 – South-East: Alcochete, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Seixal, Setúbal (routes 4xxx), operated by Alsa Todi (Setúbal).

Route numbering logic is straightforward:
— 1st digit = zone.
— 2nd digit = service type:
— 0–4: within same municipality/city
— 5: between adjacent municipalities/cities
— 6: links to Barreiro or Cascais (with parallel local networks)
— 7–8: connections to Lisbon
— 9: beyond the metropolitan area
— Last two digits = individual route ID, sometimes retaining pre-network legacy numbers.

While daily operations are handled by the four contracted operators, Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa (TML) oversees network planning and ticketing, coordinating with other regional operators to maintain integrated passenger services
