Odivelas
Founded: 1998
Area: 26.54 km2
Population: 148`034
Odivelas is a municipality located in the Lisbon District of Portugal, directly north of the city of Lisbon. It is a part of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and serves as a densely populated suburban extension of the capital. Odivelas gained its status as an independent municipality in 1998, having previously belonged to the municipality of Loures. Since that time, it has cultivated a strong local identity while remaining closely integrated into the economic and social framework of Greater Lisbon. As one of the 18 municipalities within the Lisbon District, Odivelas plays a significant role in regional mobility and urban development.
Odivelas enjoys a well-established public transportation system that connects it effectively to Lisbon and surrounding municipalities, including the Yellow line of the Lisbon metro and both the Carris and Carris Metropolitana bus networks.
The municipality is organized into four civil parishes (freguesias), which are: Odivelas, Pontinha e Famões, Póvoa de Santo Adrião e Olival Basto, and Ramada e Caneças.

Lisbon's Metro was officially opened on December 29th, 1959. The network featured a Y-shaped line connecting Restauradores to Rotunda (currently known as Marquês de Pombal), with branches extending to Entre Campos and Sete Rios (now Jardim Zoológico), where the rolling stock depot (Parque de Material de Oficinas I, or just PMO I) was situated, also connected to the outer-loop Cintura Line of CP.
In march 2004 the yellow line was extended towards north Odivelas with two stations within the municipality — "Senhor Roubado" and "Odivelas".
Approved expansion and constructions
A new transit line has been authorized in the northern region of Lisbon, encompassing the municipalities of Odivelas and Loures. The Violet Line will not function as a traditional metro line; instead, it will serve as a light rail route featuring underground sections. This line will link Várzea de Loures in Loures to the metro station in Odivelas and extend to Beatriz Ângelo Hospital, creating a 'C' shaped route.

The Carris Metropolitana network offers bus services throughout the Lisbon metropolitan area, featuring routes that operate within individual municipalities, connect neighbouring municipalities, or provide direct access to Lisbon.
The metropolitan area is divided into four zones, with Lisbon at the center, and each of the four licensed operators managing their respective areas while facilitating seamless travel across zones. These operators have assumed control of nearly all local routes established before 2022, ensuring a consistent level of service across the entire metropolitan region. Barreiro and Cascais are the only two municipalities that have maintained their own bus operators independent of the Carris Metropolitana network; however, by 2025, they do not operate electric buses.
Each route number in the Carris Metropolitana network consists of four digits, where the first two digits indicate the route's location. The first digit represents the network area (1, 2, 3, or 4), while the second digit denotes the route type (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 for routes within a single municipality with each number indicating which municipality from this area; 5 for inter-municipal connections; 6 for routes linking Barreiro and Cascais; 7 and 8 for routes connecting to Lisbon; and 9 for routes extending beyond the Lisbon metropolitan area). The last two digits simply represent the route number, which may sometimes correspond to a local route established before 2022.
Odivelas, located in area 2 of the network, is served by Rodoviária de Lisboa from Lisbon, which operates routes 22xx within the Odivelas municipality, 25xx connections to adjacent municipalities excluding Cascais, 26xx connections to areas 1 and 2, and 27xx direct routes to Lisbon. There are no dedicated electric bus routes; all routes can be serviced by either regular or electric buses.
