The Swiss manufacturer Stadler is set to deliver new light rail vehicles for Cologne.
The order has been placed: Cologne's public transport operator (KVB) has commissioned the Swiss rail company Stadler to build 132 new high-floor light rail trains for lines 3, 4, 5, 13, 16, 17, and 18 – a contract worth 700 million euros.
Stadler will supply 132 new trains along with 34 intermediate modules, each ten meters long. These modules can be inserted via a quick coupling system when needed, allowing two light rail trains to be combined into a 70-meter train that can accommodate 470 passengers. This was not possible with any of the previous-generation trains in the KVB network. There will no longer be single 30-meter trains with driver’s cabs at both ends. The new trains will operate either in the 60-meter configuration or with the inserted intermediate module. |
