Lisbon’s New Tram Line 16E to Transform Eastern Mobility by 2028
|
Lisbon is set to take a major step forward in sustainable urban transport with the introduction of tram line 16E, a new route linking the city center to the eastern district of Oriente. The project will enhance connectivity across six key areas: Santa Maria Maior, São Vicente, Penha de França, Beato, Marvila, and Parque das Nações.
What sets 16E apart is its fully dedicated track, a first for Lisbon’s tram network. The line will be supported by priority traffic signals along its entire route, ensuring faster journeys and greater timetable reliability.
The 16E is a central component of the eastern segment of Lisbon’s high-speed tram project, a plan more than 30 years in the making. It will extend the existing riverside tram corridor from Algés, passing through Praça do Comércio (as line 15E), and continuing to Parque das Nações under the new 16E designation.
Travel times between the city center and Parque das Nações are expected to drop dramatically — from around 60 minutes to just 35 minutes.
With an estimated €160 million investment, the project includes the purchase of new articulated trams designed for high capacity and comfort. Authorities expect the line to become a viable alternative to car travel, supporting Lisbon’s broader sustainability goals by reducing congestion and emissions.
Annual ridership is projected at 7.6 to 8.1 million passengers, with 16–18% expected to be new public transport users.
In a twist of history, the 16E will revive — in a modernized form — a route once served by a tram line dismantled in the early 1990s. That former line connected Terreiro do Paço to Poço do Bispo, running almost parallel to the new 16E but slightly further inland. Remarkably, it covered roughly half the length of the upcoming route.
