Advertisers occasionally used several trams at once and this was the case here. It was pure coincidence that I managed to get all 3 trams (there were no more) in 1 photo at the same time. The theme was an art exhibition.

Once an advertising contract expired and while waiting for the next customer, trams were simply covered in white.

Van der Delftstraat

The last tram to run the old surface route to the city centre. The following day, the tram tunnel would be put into service. During these works, which took only a weekend, a bus to Merksem ran under the same number.
It's also possible that the real date was already 02/04/1996, the photo was made around midnight.

Pothoekstraat

This route was abandoned in 1996. Route 3 now uses another route towards the city centre. There is also an unused tram tunnel under this street for 40 years (situation 2024). There are recent plans to finish the stations and put the tram tunnel into service, perhaps in 2027 (or later, or not).

In 1994, night work was carried out on the track. The workers were happy to pose for tram 8826 before they could effectively start: this was only when the last tram had entered the depot after midnight.

During this period (when the photo was taken), the trams were renumbered and repainted according to De Lijn's new scheme. The tram on the left is still riding around in the old colours but it was just given a new number at the time. The tram on the right is covered with advertising but its red bumper and old numbering betrays its origins.
