On 23rd August 2023 Metropolitano de Lisboa announced the extension of the Red line to Alcântara with four new stops (Campolide/Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique, Infante Santo and Alcântara). The construction of this extension should be completed in 2026.

As of March 2024 the only not yet approved expansion is for yellow line from Telheiras to Benfica. All other expansion have been approved or are already under construction.
